One of the biggest causes of causing major injuries and in worse-case scenario death is working at height. Falling from roofs, ladder, absence of guardrails and fragile surfaces are some of the reasons workers fall down from height.

So, what can be done to protect the workers? – It is important proper planning is done along with supervised before a worker is sent to work at height. Using right type of equipment is helpful. Moreover, the worker needs approach the place in a sensible manner to avoid any serious problems.

What control measures to take? – The risks should be first assessed by the worker before starting their work. Here are a few things to do.

  1. Avoid working at a high-height.
  2. Use the right type of equipment while working at a height that cannot be avoided. You also need to consider that the place is already safe to work at.
  3. While using the right type of equipment, make sure you minimize the distance where risks cannot be ignored.

The Dos

  1. Do work from the ground as much as possible
  2. Ensure you reach the height and come back safely to the ground.
  3. Make sure you use a suitable, stable and strong equipment. Also, check and do maintenance on the equipment you will be using.

The don’ts

  1. Do not overload the ladders. If you’re going to use the ladders to climb and take materials along, then ensure it isn’t overloaded with a ton of weight.
  2. Use ladders only for light and short duration of work.
  3. Always rest a ladder on a strong foundation.
